Our mission is to help public schools develop school playgrounds into neighborhood parks and to empower local communities to make changes and improvements to their neighborhoods.
About Us
SPARK School Park Program was started in 1983 to increase park space in the city of Houston by making use of public school grounds. The only rule is that a SPARK Park must have pedestrian access after school and on the weekends for the community. Over the past 30 years, SPARK has worked with over 200 schools in the Houston/Harris County area. Once a park is 10 years old, the school can apply for a re-SPARK. Once the school is selected to participate, the principal forms a SPARK Committee to fundraise and work with an architect/landscape architect to design the park. SPARK’s goal is to complete a park in 12-18 months. Public art created by students is often featured in the park, along with park amenities and landscaping.
