Our mission is to effect positive and lasting change in the lives of New York City's young people and their public schools.About Us
For 25 years, NYC Outward Bound Schools has been transforming schools and changing lives by bringing out the best in students, teachers, and school leaders throughout the City. We operate a five-borough network of public Expeditionary Learning schools, in partnership with the City's Department of Education, which primarily target students from underserved neighborhoods. Our educational approach delivers academic rigor through active, real-world learning, develops character skills, inspires students to serve their communities, and instills in them the grit to overcome challenges. Our graduates succeed in more than just college and careers - they're active citizens who make their communities better for all.To further extend our impact, we also offer adventure and team-building programs to young people not enrolled in our network schools. Both our schools and our programs impart the central lesson of Outward Bound: that all individuals, regardless of background or circumstance, can achieve at higher levels than they previously thought possible.
ABC Covers Our College Application March
ABC 7 visited our 2nd Annual College Application March, where over 600 seniors from across our network of high schools marched their applications to their local post office or mail truck to meet the early application deadline established by many top-tier colleges and universities. The March happened at all of our high schools, which are in all 5 boroughs, and is an annual tradition that helps establish a college-going culture in our schools and which exhibits the grit and determination required by students as they persevere on route to college and beyond.
