Mission Statement
Northwestern Settlement helps low-income families and individuals take personal responsibility, explore opportunities and options, and become or remain self-sufficient by providing a central point around which social and specialized service, education, arts, and collaborative programs can be accessed.
The Settlement equips its neighbors with the tools they need to succeed. Our entire program is based upon the concept of individual and family self-help and the underlying philosophy that every person deserves to maximize his or her potential to become a productive member of society.
About Us
Northwestern University Settlement Association (Northwestern Settlement) nurtures, educates, and inspires children, families, and seniors in need, empowering them to take personal responsibility and attain self-sufficiency. Founded in 1891 by Northwestern University, Northwestern Settlement supports Chicago’s West Town community by offering wrap-around services that meet the complex needs of our ‘neighbors.’ Northwestern Settlement serves more than 40,000 neighbors each year through programs that focus on education, social services, and the arts.
Current Educational programming includes:
• Rowe Elementary Charter School
• After-school and summer youth programming
• Head Start
Social Services programming includes:
• Food Pantry and Emergency Services
• House In The Wood - residential camp for inner-city youth
Arts programming includes:
• Adventure Stage Chicago - theatre
• Neighborhood Bridges - arts outreach program
Northwestern Settlement provides a continuum of services that offer immediate assistance for short-term crises and knowledge, opportunities, and support to break the long-term cycle of poverty.
