Mission Statement

For Love of Children is a 501(c)(3), community-based, nonprofit organization that has been working with young people and their families in Washington, D.C. since 1965. FLOC's mission is to provide educational services beyond the classroom to help D.C. students succeed from first grade through college and career. FLOC leverages a network of professional staff, trained volunteers, engaged families, and active community partners to teach, empower, and transform students' lives. Almost 600 students access FLOC's after-school, weekend and summer programs at public schools across D.C., in FLOC's headquarters in Ward 1, and at FLOC's Outdoor Education Center in West Virginia.

About Us

Several years ago, For Love of Children redefined its mission to focus primarily on educational programming and outcomes from elementary school through college and career. We identified as a priority FLOC's commitment to increase the number of D.C. students staying in high school and graduating. Statistics show that only about 55% of D.C. seniors graduated in 2009 (Alliance for Excellent Education, D.C. report updated October 2010). In addition, only about 9% of D.C.'s high school graduates who do go on to college actually complete an undergraduate degree in four years (Double the Numbers, 2006). Since 2007, however, 100% of students participating in FLOC programs have graduated from high school on time, and 100% of these graduates have been accepted into postsecondary programs. FLOC currently has 54 students enrolled in postsecondary programs and more than 80% are on track to complete their degree in five years.
