Mission Statement
Founded in 1991, Centro Latino's mission is to teach literacy and provide educational opportunities to those who have not had the benefit of an education, especially Latino immigrants. Our goal is for the two million, non-literate Spanish speakers in the U.S. to be able to learn to read and write. By doing so, they will have the opportunity to become proficient in Spanish and English, improve their quality of life, enjoy economic stability and improved self-esteem and confidence, participate actively in their communities, understand how to learn, and impact future generations by passing on a tradition of learning.
About Us
Since 1991, Centro Latino for Literacy has taught non-literate, adult Spanish speakers how to read, write, and compute, enabling them to function in today’s society. Some of the major reasons our students, who range from ages 16-88, want to become literate are to learn English, help their children with their schoolwork, and gain better work opportunities. For the vast majority of our students, this is the first step toward independence and knowing they can better provide for themselves and their families.
In 2004, Centro Latino for Literacy transferred its basic Spanish literacy curriculum, Leamos® (Let’s Read), to an online format and is developing additional web-literacy courses. Through the use of technology, Centro Latino is closer to realizing a vision that every adult Spanish speaker living in the United States be able to become functionally bi-literate in Spanish and English.
Literacy breaks the cycle of poverty and unlocks potential.
