Mission Statement
Buffalo Bayou Partnership is a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing and transforming Buffalo Bayou, Houston’s most significant natural resource. The Partnership coordinates the integration of major amenities into the Bayou greenbelt and seeks ways to increase community involvement through pedestrian, boating, and biking amenities; permanent and temporary art installations; and other natural and built attractions. Buffalo Bayou Partnership's 20-year visionary master plan, Buffalo Bayou and Beyond, calls for Buffalo Bayou to be a central, regional-scale amenity that serves multiple purposes - recreation, flood management, and eco-system restoration. The organization seeks to create an active and vibrant waterway that enriches the lives of residents and attracts visitors from throughout the region and beyond. Specific elements of the long-range plan include a 10-mile hike and bike trail system from Shepherd Drive to the Port of Houston Turning Basin, parks and other open space destinations, and high quality development adjacent to the bayou corridor.About Us
Buffalo Bayou Partnership was founded in 1986 by former Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire and the county judge to develop a realistic strategy for Buffalo Bayou’s development, beginning with a park to commemorate Houston’s 150th birthday.Since that time, the organization’s board and staff have raised more than $120 million for the bayou’s revitalization. Hike and bike trails, award winning parks, water quality initiatives, and a host of recreational and cultural activities are among our significant accomplishments.
