Suicide is a major public health problem in this country, accounting for more than 30,000 deaths per year and 750,000 non-fatal attempts. Many of these are preventable.
About Us
For over 40 years, the American Association of Suicidology has led the advancement of scientific and programmatic efforts in suicide prevention through research, education and training, services, and resources. Yet youth suicide continues to be a problem. As the third leading cause of death, over 4,300 youth die by suicide each year. AAS decided to focus on the issue, launching the National Center for the Prevention of Youth Suicide.
The National Center’s goal is to reduce the rate of youth suicide attempts and deaths by:
1. Disseminating the warning signs of suicide to get at-risk youth appropriate mental health care and support
2. Increasing the development and use of best practices in suicide prevention among youth caregivers
3. Targeting groups of youth known to be at higher risk
4. Developing strategies to prevent and address suicide risk factors and to promote better mental health and resilience of all youth.
