Academy of Hope's mission is to provide high-quality, adult, basic education in a manner that changes lives and improves our community.
About Us
Academy of Hope’s adult, basic education and support services serve as an on-ramp for lower-skilled adults to upgrade skills that lead not only to a high school credential but also to post-secondary credentials and careers that pay a living wage. In D.C., there are over 60,000 residents – that’s one in five working-age adults – who don’t have a high school diploma or have only the most basic functional skills. These individuals, who are our neighbors, parents, voters, and workers, simply do not possess the skills to find or retain living-wage employment, which is why the unemployment rate for those without a high school credential is over 20% in D.C. In order to reach a more equitable, healthy, and productive city, we must help low-skilled adults, who are seven times more likely to live in poverty. The first step in the process of breaking this cycle of poverty is helping low-skilled adults acquire the skills and credentials that will allow them to lift themselves out of unemployment and low-wage jobs and onto the path to long-term economic well-being. Academy of Hope’s work is to accomplish precisely this.
