A nonprofit network of 17 public interest justice centers in the United States and Mexico, Appleseed is dedicated to building a society in which opportunities are genuine, access to the law is universal and equal, and government advances the public interest. Appleseed uncovers and corrects injustices and barriers to opportunity through legal, legislative, and market-based structural reform. Working with our vast pro bono network, we identify and examine social injustices, make specific recommendations, and advocate for effective solutions to deep-seated, structural problems. Together, Appleseed and Appleseed Centers form a network for positive change, building a society that provides each individual access to justice and a genuine opportunity to lead a full and productive life.
About Us
Appleseed organizes, supports, and connects Appleseed Centers. It provides start-up funding and staffing assistance and recruits leadership to get new Centers off the ground. Additionally, Appleseed identifies and secures funding for local Centers and organizes them around national collaborative projects in its core issue areas of education, financial access, and immigrant rights. On an ongoing basis, Appleseed helps promote Center work, serves as a clearinghouse, and provides training and technical assistance, particularly in the areas of communications and development.
Appleseed’s 17 Centers function as independent organizations linked by the national network. Each Center recruits new staff and leadership, raises its own sources of funding, and develops its own projects and strategies for reform. Although most Center projects begin at the local level, almost all have national implications. Additionally, Centers work actively with the national office of Appleseed on collaborative projects, many of which grow out of local work in such areas as education, financial access, and health care. Appleseed Centers rely on a combination of staff and pro-bono volunteers to conduct project work.
