Why was the Giving Library created?

The Giving Library was created to help philanthropists give wisely. Members of the Giving Library can discover amazing nonprofits that meet their specific interests and make secure donations. Nonprofits benefit as well. By partnering with the Giving Library, organizations become part of our searchable Card Catalog, so members can donate and spread the word.  And now, the Giving Library is part of Greatnonprofits.org. GreatNonprofits is the largest nonprofit review site exclusively for nonprofits (a community-sourced site with over 200,000 reviews about nonprofits).  Today more than 20,000 nonprofits use greatnonprofits.org as the place to capture their stories from the community -- all free!  Learn more.

Who uses the Giving Library?

The Giving Library serves anyone who is passionate about making a difference. From people interested in strategic, charitable giving, to high-level philanthropists, to public, private and corporate foundations, users from diverse backgrounds utilize the Giving Library to connect with nonprofits. Nonprofit organizations also use the Giving Library to help spread the word about their mission.

How were the featured nonprofit organizations selected for the Giving Library?

The Giving Library selected U.S.-based, nonprofit organizations with various charitable missions—from large to small, well-known to relatively unknown, established to emerging—to give philanthropists a menu of options within each cause. Please note that inclusion in the Giving Library is not necessarily an endorsement of the organization.

Why should I register for an account?

With a Library Card, you can discover nonprofits that meet your specific interests, make secure donations and keep up with your favorite organizations. And with our Share to Give feature, you can share your favorite nonprofits (up to five per month) via Facebook or Twitter. For every share, the Giving Library will donate $5 to each organization.

What are the badges, and how are they earned?

Displayed on an organization’s profile, badges are earned by meeting specific organizational goals. Badges include the following:

  1. Welcome Badge — Every organization that’s added to the Giving Library website earns this badge.

  2. Longevity Badge — An organization receives this badge if it has been in existence for 25 years.

  3. First Donation Badge — An organization receives this badge once it's received its first donation through the Giving Library website.

  4. Donation Tiers — Badges are received for reaching a certain donation amount: either $1,000, $2,000 or $5,000.

  5. GreatNonprofits — Organization has been evaluated by GreatNonprofits.

  6. Social Impact — Organization has been evaluated by Social Impact.

  7. Popular Tiers — Badges are received for reaching a certain number of shares via Facebook or Twitter: 50, 100 and 250 shares.

How are donations processed?

Donations are processed through JustGive, a nonprofit organization founded in 1999 that is tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. JustGive processes donations made through the Giving Library and approves all eligible disbursements based on donor recommendations. JustGive is the public charity of record for tax documentation purposes. If your designated charity funds do not clear the bank within one year, those funds are reallocated to JustGive for its program services. The transaction fee is 3.2% + .25 per donation up to $1,000. If the donation is more than $1,000, the transaction fee is 3%.

Is the Giving Library still filming videos for nonprofit organizations?

No, the Giving Library is not filming videos at this time.

Who provided the information for each nonprofit’s Giving Library profile?

Most of the information is linked to the organization’s profile on GuideStar. This includes the nonprofit’s location, website address, and “Organization Snapshot.” The “Mission Statement” and “About Us” sections are either pulled from GuideStar or provided by the nonprofit. And, if you collect reviews through our parent site, greatnonprofits.org, your reviews will also show up on GuideStar among other sites such as JustGive, Foundant and more.

Who is GreatNonprofits?

GreatNonprofits is the largest nonprofit review site exclusively for nonprofits (a community-sourced site with over 200,000 reviews about nonprofits).  You can invite clients you serve, volunteers, donors or board members to write a review. Today more than 20,000 nonprofits use the GreatNonprofits site as the place to capture their stories from the community -- all free!  After the Better Business bureau, the GreatNonprofits Top-Rated badge is the most recognized seal of trust for donors.

Earlier in 2014, the Giving Library was gifted to GreatNonprofits. The GreatNonprofits team is busy looking for more ways to grow the great content on the Giving Library. Stay tuned.

What is the future plan for the Giving Library?

For now GreatNonprofits will maintain the Giving Library and all of its great content. We're busy looking for great new tools to make it easier and faster to post videos. Stay tuned.

Is the Giving Library only open to US-based nonprofits?

In order to participate in the Giving Library, organizations must be US-registered 501(c)(3) Public Charities. Organizations based in another country but registered in the US are free to participate as well.

If our organization is listed on the Giving Library, how do we update our contact information?

If your organization registered an account manager for your profile, simply log in to the account and click "manage organization." If you didn't registered for an account (or are unsure), email support@greatnonprofits.org with the changes you'd like and we can update your profile for you.

How do we gain access to the administrative pages of our nonprofit profile?

If your organization registered an account manager for your profile, simply log in to the account and click "manage organization." If you have not registered for an account, email support@greatnonprofits.org with the email address that you'd like to manage the account and we will grant administrative privileges to that account.

Do we need to do anything so that our Giving Library videos appear on our nonprofit profile on GreatNonprofits?

We are in the process of ensuring that all videos on the Giving Library are also displayed on GreatNonprofits. Your video will be displayed automatically once some necessary updates are completed.

How can we obtain high-resolution version of our Giving Library videos?

You can obtain the high-resolution version of your video by emailing support@greatnonprofits.org. Please note that video filmed prior to the launch of the Giving Library website are not available in HD.

Can we obtain raw footage of our videos and edit for our uses?

Unfortunately, source footage are not available.

Our Giving Library video is outdated. Can you edit it for us?

No. Unfortunately we cannot edit the video for you. We can refer you to a videographer who can edit the video or you can hire someone to edit the video for you. To obtain the source footage to edit the video, please email support@greatnonprofits.org.
